Why Use Cloth?
BETTER FOR BABY'S BUM - The incidence of diaper rash increased markedly with the introduction of disposables. Disposable diapers contain trace amounts of Dioxin, an extremely toxic by-product of the paper- bleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancer-linked chemicals. It is banned in most countries, but not the U.S. Disposable diapers also contain Tributyl-tin (TBT) - a toxic pollutant known to cause hormonal problems in humans and animals, and Sodium Polyacrylate, a type of super absorbent polymer (SAP), which becomes a gel-like substance when wet. A similar substance had been used in super-absorbancy tampons until the early 1980s when it was revealed that the material increased the risk of toxic shock syndrome. In May 2000, the Archives of Disease in Childhood published research showing that scrotal temperature is increased in boys wearing disposable diapers, and that prolonged use of disposable diapers will blunt or completely abolish the physiological testicular cooling mechanism important for normal spermatogenesis.
When your child is old enough to vote, ask him/her if they would prefer to wear soft fabric or itchy plastic. Cloth wins every time!
BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT - Do you know it's illegal to put human waste in landfills? The fine print on all disposable diaper packages say to shake baby soil into toilet. Less than 1% follow these instructions and over 92% of all single-use diapers end up in a landfill. No one knows how long it takes for a disposable diaper to decompose, but it is estimated to be about 250-500 years, long after your children, grandchildren and great, great, great grandchildren will be gone.
It takes around 80,000 pounds of plastic and over 200,000 trees a year to manufacture the disposable diapers for American babies alone. I love the earth! It’s a beautiful place! God gave us stewardship over this planet so we could use it properly and not destroy it. I’d like to do my part to keep it as beautiful as possible.
BETTER FOR YOUR BUDGET - Money doesn't grow on trees. Your baby will go through 6000 diaper changes from birth to potty and you'll spend over $2000 on disposable and wipes. You can cloth diaper your baby for under $300! Spend your money on something you can keep, not on something to occupy the landfills.
IT'S REALLY VERY EASY AND CONVENIENT - With all the different styles and brands of cloth diapers on the market today, there's something for everyone. No matter what your budget or how busy your lifestyle, you CAN cloth diaper your baby with ease.
THERE ARE SO MANY CHOICES - There are so many different styles, fabrics, prints, colors, and other options to choose from in the world of cloth diapers. With disposables, all you get to choose is which annoying cartoon character to plaster on your baby’s pelvis.
YOU CAN SEW YOUR OWN - I like to sew! I love the creative outlet and sense of satisfaction that comes with sewing your own cloth diapers and/or cloth diapering accessories. You can even go so far as to design, invent, and make different types of diapers and covers. It’s really fun!
